Crushing Blow To Car Dealers

What your President is doing to business is criminal. Rilly. Violating Section 8 of the United States Constitution is criminal madness.

But you can hear crickets.

Seven Oregon Chrysler and fifteen Washington dealers have had their livelihood taken from them with the stroke of a pen. Chrysler, under pressure from President Obama, has negated their contract with these dealers. Period. What they had yesterday is gone.

Poof!

I watched Eddy Tonkin on CNBC last night and was impressed. Eddy is currently vice-chairman of the National Automobile Dealers Association. Eddy did good. And he's in Washington, D.C. today asking for some common sense from our national legislature.

Good luck, Ed.

So, here's the list of local and Oregon dealers that have gotten the ax. I know a lot of these guys. My heart aches. They've lost their livelihoods because of Chicago Rules. You wanted change? You gotcher change.

How long will you put up with this? If you don't complain, they'll just keep on keepin' on.

Rilly.
Comments:

Not to mention the violation of all the state and federal laws aregarding "breach of contract" and "interference with contract".

But I bet if a dealership were to attempt to take Chrysler to court, they'd find Chrysler is now a "psuedo-government" agency. Y'know the ones. Bound by neither private nor government sector laws.

Remember folks: A democracy is two wolves and one sheep voting what's for dinner.

What will be our Concord and Lexington?

Comments:

The breadth of this power grab is astonishing. GM is now Government Motors, and with Obama at the helm, they'll be importing cars from China. Amazing.

Comments:

Walt--

Drove a Concord for a while. POS.

Seriously, those of us who care about law and the intent of having law seem to be steam roller material. Business groups, banks, investment companies seem to be taking the current policy sans lube without complaint.

When was the last time anyone sent a letter to Congressman Wu? I sent an e-mail two days ago, but I don't think it matters. Most voters just don't seem to be able to connect the dots.

Comments:

I don't know how much good emails do, if you're a regular writer.

I don't even get the form-letter acknowledgements anymore from my federal reps.

I have a sneaking suspicion that if you write them "too much", you get added to their "junk" filter.

Comments:

Clever politicians are very adept at sensing danger. We, the cranks who write all the time, are a bit like belling the cat. It is when there is an upsurge in contact with a clever politician's office that the clever politician see that perhaps the cranks are gaining traction.

Just as there are the cranks, there are the fellow travelers. The fellow travelers are just "as ignored" as are the cranks. Or course they are more likely to receive glowing thanks for their support. Franking privileges are intended to keep the elected in power.

But, to ignore those with whom you disagree is dangerous stuff to the clever politician. Better to bell the cat.

The point is, if, as a reader, you haven't taken the time to either write--or taken the lazy man's measure and e-mailed--your legislators with words and works of displeasure, you have failed to indicate to him that it may be time for the clever politician to re-formulate his pattern of behaviour. They, like rats, can sense when a ship is in danger. And the clever ones are a bit quicker.

point of view,
Gm needs money. Cars arn't selling as needed, but inventory sits on car lots.
Now it sounds good sell GM's inventory (not the car dealers) to raise money for Gm. Those cars will sell, they alwways do.
The dealers will and can still sell the cars and make a profit providing they mark up. Gm gets back on their feet and have learned not to put so many cars out on the market.
Now there is a limit as to how many stores should sell these cars. 1100 are not doing so well apparently--(glut in the market place) doesn't mater one way or the other, but GM wants some assets back to keep going.
When demand returns I'm sure more dealers will be back in the loop also.
It's the contract to keep cars on all these extra lots which is causing the problems in GM.---as I see it.

Comments:

Chrysler lost 44-thousand unit sales by closing these dealers. That was orders on the books. I can't give you a number for lost GM sales, since the process GM is following is distinctly different than that of Chrysler.

When a car is delivered to a dealer, the manufacturer is paid. Dealers have agreements with financial institutions, called flooring plans, that allow them to buy the new cars and then pay the interest on those newly purchased cars until they are sold. Hold onto it too long, and they'll want their cash back. So dealers are incentivised to get rid of units that don't turn.

The key product within GM is Chevy. And if you've followed Chevy dealers for the last 30 to forty years, you'll see that there are many former Chevy dealers that no longer exist. Two that come to mind easily are Reitman Motors in Clatskanie and Odegard Chevrolet in Seaside. Lovell Auto had been told some twenty years ago that they would have to improve their dealership facilities if they were going to retain their Chevy dealership. Which was a major problem for their subsequent owner, which was solved when it finally came into the hands of the Hayward family.

The Oregonian quoted the Hayward's Tillamook General Sales manager in their article on GM closings as saying that they were going to be okay. That's good for both Clatsop and Tillamook counties, and really a tribute to the hard work and intelligence of the Haywards.

Comments:

you say the manufacturer is paid when the car hit the floor, but only through the program set up as the bank hence car manufacture.
these programs to buy the cars are still financed through the car manufactures to the most part.
The dealer still needs to sell the car to get out from under.
Thus chrysler and gm want their cash for their inventories out there.
